Heavy-duty packing tape is applied in a crosshatch grid pattern across the entire mirror surface. If the mirror cracks during removal, the tape holds the pieces together — preventing dangerous falling shards.

The main event. Using the technique appropriate for your mirror's mounting method, we carefully separate it from the wall. For clipped mirrors, we remove clips and lift. For glued mirrors, we use heat, wire saws, and wooden wedges.

• Wooden shims gently wedged to create separation
